The battle at Klapados – History

Sometimes we came to the places about which we know nothing. Sometimes we just turn right (or left) into dirty road and... here we go... in such places, geocaching is very helpful. At least we know what we have in front of us
In this specific case we have a beautiful views, fantastic hills upward and pilgrime's way and monastery downward. In between we have HISTORY. And brave men who was fighting here for freedom.

1912 November 8, Day of the Archangels time 07:00
a squadron of the Greek fleet led by the battleship "Averof", appears outside the port of Mytilene it is escorted by five destroyers and a personnel carrier. "Averof" slowly approaches Kastrely.
The local authorities call a meeting and decide to surrender to avoid the bloodshed. However the Turkish General Ganis declares that since he hasn’t got such an order must resist the Greek forces. A boat launched from Averof enters the port with the Greek flag at the stern and a white one at the bow.Officer B. Karamouzis comes ashore to demand the surrender of the city.
The representative of the authorities Eram Beis listens to the Greek officer’s demands, according to which, the city should be surrendered in two hours at 11.00 o’clock, and then presents them to his superiors. The General Ganis rejects the demands although everybody else wanted to surrender. The Turkish commander of the Aegean islands boards the battleship Averof followed by his general Eram, archbishop Kyrillos and several foreign diplomats.
He offers two different options but the admiral turns them both down and demands that the city be surrendered by 12.30 otherwise the Greek forces would land and attack.
This is exactly what happened and the town is liberated without any resistance and without casualties on both sides. The Turkish forces move out and retreat to their Klapados base.

07 December * The combined attack of the two units causes almost immediately a Turkish request for the meeting of the two commanders. The meeting takes place at 11:00 but nothing is agreed. The attack begins again at 14:00 and continues throughout the afternoon. At 22:00 the Turkish forces surrender without any terms.
